The show was expressly designed to use television as an educational medium, with segments timed based on children's attention spans. The show was also designed so that parents would watch with their children, which is why so many celebrities are asked to appear. Even so, early critics fretted that "Sesame Street" was a secret plot to teach kids to watch TV. Had Sweden's Gunder Hagg been just a tiny bit faster, he'd have been as famous as ... well ... Roger Bannister. It was Hagg's record, for running the mile in 4 minutes, 1.4 seconds, that Bannister broke on May 6, 1954. Hagg set his record in 1945 and might well have shattered the four-minute mile as well, but he was deemed to be a professional in 1946 and kicked out of the amateur circuit.
