Mercury Still Retrograde

It is said that Van Gogh rarely painted with more than six colors on his palette. Chances are that your favorite pop song has no more than six chords. Mercury, in the final six days of his last retrograde of the year, reiterates the message of the design principle known as KISS: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

ARIES (March 21-April 19). There is no correlation between creativity and owning things. While it may help to have certain tools, who knows? It may hinder, too. Often artistry is defined by its limitations.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20). Assume you won't be rewarded for anything you do today. This probably won't turn out to be true, but you're better off coming from that very low expectation. It will help you experience the inherent value in your action.

GEMINI (May 21-June 21). There's something you want to sell. Today is about promotion. This part is daunting. You won't feel like you know what you're doing. It may take a few tries before you strike on an effective pitch.

CANCER (June 22-July 22). In a few weeks, you'll get support beyond your hopes. Right now, you're going through an endurance test of sorts. Instead of waiting for their approval, go ahead and approve of yourself. They'll catch up.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). The same words could come from a teacher, a world leader, a child, a criminal or your mom — the source does not change the truth of the words. As for how many will believe, that's a different story.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). The more generous a person is the more strong boundaries are necessary. When you clearly know what you're willing and not willing to do, it's easier to give with a joyful heart.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). You accurately assess the strengths of others and assign tasks accordingly. If you're not in a position to assign tasks, you could always just ask people to help. There are a number of people who owe you that.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). In most of today's cases, if you handle what comes up as soon as it does, you'll be ahead of the game and have time to spare when you need it most. Bonus: You'll feel like the big, capable, effective winner you are.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). There are those who are utterly dissatisfied no matter what kind of good fortune happens to land on their lot. Avoid them. They make horrible bosses, customers and friends.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). You know some of what you're good at. You also have talents that are so close to you, you don't see them. Let your crew fill you in about what you're missing. To capitalize on your talents, you have to know what they are.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). Commit to making consistent efforts toward a certain end for several months, if not an entire year. You need the longer timeframe because there will be down cycles that are worth weathering to get to the big win.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). This is a day to strip away the unnecessary items so you better understand and appreciate what it is you really need to do your work. One essential is inspiration. Support is helpful, but optional.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Oct. 4). You'll find your special place in the world. Even when you know the answers, you'll still benefit from asking for more input, if only because it will teach you how unique your own perspective really is. Pisces and Sagittarius people adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 8, 14, 2, 27 and 11.

FORECAST FOR THE WEEK AHEAD: The thing you longed for in the past and didn't receive will circle back to inform you this week. No, it won't haunt you, bother you, or incite you to seek revenge, pity or remuneration, but it will merely, plainly and simply inform you. With an unemotional, scientific, nearly robotic strategy, it is possible to make a new plan to get what is really necessary. It turns out that what you wanted way back, well, maybe you didn't need it so desperately after all. You made it this far, and you're better for it, and now it's time to move on.

Tuesday brings an opposition of Mars and Neptune to motivate us with the fear of missing out. As with most cases like this, the tendency is to imagine that everyone doing something different from what we're doing is having a better time. Of course, that's not true. Think of how you were feeling when you took some of those smiling pics for all to see. Sometimes you were lit up from the inside; other times you were bored or just trying to prove a point along the lines of, "I was here."

On Friday, Mercury ends the last retrograde of the year, which should come as something of a relief.

CELEBRITY PROFILES: On his Facebook page, hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons says, "Every day set the simple goal of trying to be more awake and less distracted." A proponent of meditation, Simmons has written a book about success through stillness. His natal Aquarius moon is the sign of a busy and highly creative mind. His Mercury in Virgo provides grounding for the intellectual air sign.
